30th Birthday Bash
EAST VILLAGE CORNERSTONE (INSTITUTION) CELEBRATES 30 YEARS -
October 19, 2013
(DES MOINES, IOWA) The Blazing Saddle, an East Village institution, celebrates 30 years in business on October 19, 2013. "We have seen and lived through many changes - both in the businesses, but also a cultural shift", says Bob Eikleberry the original of three owners.
Established in 1983, The Blazing Saddle replaced the Capitol Pub. "Back then there were five other bars catering to the LGBT community" reminisces Eikleberry, "and now they are gone.
Businesses and City support have changed greatly since Eikleberry opened his doors. "I remember sitting on the steering committee charged with revitalization of the area in 2002" said owner Bryan Smith. "All attention was going towards the west, and not a lot of support was directed to the east". Our revitalization came from our eclectic mix of business and our commitment to the area".
Smith credits their success to their support of the community and the open and welcoming environment they provide. "we are the place that all other bartenders go when they finish their shift", says a longtime patron Muffy Rosenberg (Marty Larson), The Blazing Saddle has been an incubator of small businesses, and successful non-profits". The non-profits that have formed out of idea exchanges at The Blazing Saddle are Capital City Pride, The Benefit (formerly The All Iowa AIDS Benefit), The Imperial Court of Iowa, etc.
Cultural changes and shifting attitudes. Since 1983, Iowa has seen many advances in support for the LGBT community. Chris Pullen, owner, said "many of these advances came as we, and our politicians, realized the importance and strength we are as voters". Some of those politicians have been local, but also notable national purveyors of the Saddle have been, Bill Bradley in X, Joe Biden, Tammy Baldwin and the Obama campaign members - hosting their 2012 victory party.
Today, Iowa celebrates full equality for all of its citizens regardless of sexual orientation and expression. "The Blazing Saddle has been a catalyst for change and a community leader like no other and we are grateful for such an establishment" declared Muffy.
The Blazing Saddle will be celebrating their 30th Anniversary with a Tent Party on Saturday October 19, 2013 7-11pm at 416 E 5th Street in the East Village. Special musical guest Fred Gazzo and Band will host along with other entertainment.
